Our History
Maine Passive House was founded by Danish native Jesper Kruse. In 2006, while spending a year in Denmark with his young family, Jesper heard about the passive house standard. He realized that the energy savings associated with passive house construction, as well as the increased comfort, healthfulness and longevity of the homes would be the wave of the future. When he returned to the U.S., Jesper formed Maine Passive House, and became a certified passive house consultant.
In June of 2024, the company reorganized as a worker owned cooperative with three founding owners - Katrina Belle, Anna Heath, & Jesper. The transition was an opportunity to bring all the things that made the company special - it’s innovative construction methods, trusted reputation, and triple bottom line priorities - into the future & to the next level.
The partners formed a new corporation & opted to elect the designation of benefit corporation - a legal election that stipulates that the leadership of the company has the right & responsibility to take into account all affected stakeholders when making decisions about the operation of the company.
Maine Passive House is a national leader in passive house design and construction and has developed proven systems that are uniquely designed for the northern climate. The transition to a benefit corporation marks a new chapter, emphasizing the importance of how business operations are conducted - a reflection of a sincere belief that the transition to a renewable economy & decarbonized built environment must be equitable & just.
